Jerry's Famous Deli To Shutter Woodland Hills Store In Latest Closure

WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA) — One of the San Fernando Valley's oldest delis is set to serve its last corned beef sandwich.

Jerry's Famous Deli at 21857 Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills will close its doors Saturday after more than four decades serving bagels and lox, matzo ball chicken rice soup, and other favorites.

While there was no official announcement, customers reportedly learned of the closing from a note posted on the restaurant's doors that read, "(W)e regret to inform you, this Jerry's location will be closing its doors" on Oct 16.

The closure marks the fifth Jerry's location in the Los Angeles area to close in recent years after locations in West Hollywood, Westwood, and Costa Mesa were shuttered, with only the Westwood location being unprofitable.

The pandemic hit the restaurant very hard, said the restaurant's creative director Mandy Mitchell. She said the deli tried to stay open as long as it could, but it couldn't hold on much longer.

"The Jerry's team faced a really tough decision to close because of what an iconic space it is," she said. "We just decided that we're not immune, we're amongst our fellow community."

Mitchell said they hope to bring Jerry's back better than ever at a time when things are not so uncertain.

"We're hoping that this is just temporarily for the course of what's happening," she said. "We don't have a timeline, unfortunately."

Longtime customers took to social media to lament the wave of Jerry's Deli closures.

Locations in Marina del Rey, Encino and Studio City will remain open.
