18-Year-Old Carnell Snell Jr, Fatally Shot By LAPD Last Week, Laid To Rest

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Friends and family said goodbye to Carnell Snell Jr. today -- the 18-year-old who LAPD Officers fatally shot last weekend after a short pursuit.

The police shooting in South LA led to days of local protests echoing national demonstrations.

CBS2's Laurie Perez tells us that Snell's funeral was partially dedicated to stopping the violence on all sides.

The Snell family mourned a young man who they called complex -- a high school graduate who his family admits had just gotten out of jail.

As he was laid to rest, the service made only brief mention of the unrest over police relations expressed at several protests since LAPD fatally shot Snell last weekend.

Earlier this week, the LAPD released the security video that showed the teen holding a gun in the minutes right before officers shot him -- in order to correct public opinion about what really happened, they said.

Saturday, his loved ones did not call Snell a hero, and said even if he wasn't perfect, his flaws should not have been fatal.

Attorney Dale Galipo says he represents Snell's mother, who says the family is claiming that the teen had his hands up when he was shot.

The family has not yet filed a lawsuit however, and the LAPD is still investigating the incident.
