As Voter Registration Deadline Nears, UCLA Students Seem Prepared

WESTWOOD — One of the most contentious presidential campaigns in quite some time seems to be resonating with young voters, at least at UCLA.

Volunteers canvased the school's quad Tuesday as part of national voter registration day hoping to make sure students get out and vote.

CBS2's Kristine Lazar circled the campus and found some students taking the 2016 campaign seriously.

William Muetzenberg  watched last night's debate but admits he is still undecided. "I am in a toss-up between Gary Johnson and Hillary Clinton," he said.

"Trump just speaks his mind and spews whatever his first thought is," Muetzenberg said.  "Hillary looked more presentable.  She has been cold before."

One undergrad isn't sold on Clinton, but she says she could never vote for Trump.  She called the debates a circus.

"Hillary was very prepared," Kelly Gluckman said. "She came ready and Trump just spoke over her and didn't have much to say.  He just talked to talk."

Haley Nieves, a member of Bruin Republicans at UCLA, says her candidate shined, at least out the gate.

"I think that within the first 30 minutes, Trump was the most presidential and that was an opportunity for those waiting and anticipating seeing him with the temperament and proper demeanor of a president to showcase that," Nieves said.  "But within the last hour, some of that devolved."

For many of these students, this will be the first election they're eligible to vote.  Marion Moseley turns 18 next month.  Her vote will go to Clinton.

"I would be honored and privileged for my first vote to be cast toward an incredible milestone in history with the first woman president."

The last day to register to vote online, in person and through the mail is October 24.
