Marlins 'Devastated' By Loss Of Jose Fernandez In Boating Accident
MIAMI (CBSLA.com) — Jose Fernandez, a starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins, died Sunday morning in a boating accident, the team confirmed.
Fernandez was one of the sport's young stars, and was originally scheduled to pitch in Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves. That game has since been canceled.
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
The Cuban native was the National League's Rookie of the Year in 2013.
He was 24.
