Silver Lake Elementary School Students Sickened By Veggies From Community Garden?

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA.com)  —  Students who attend a Silver Lake elementary school have reportedly gotten sick after eating some vegetables that were growing in a community garden on school property.

At least one student from Micheltorena Street Elementary was allegedly hospitalized.

The district is ordering a review of all school/community gardens.

KCAL9's Andrea Fujii reported from Silver Lake where concerned parents are asking what happened?

Parents say they were notified that "several" students got sick.

The garden is a joint venture worked on by the students and the Silver Lake community.

According to superintendent Michelle King, some students ate vegetables from the garden and became ill.

King wrote in a statement, "Out thoughts are with these children and their families as we await more information on their condition. The district has closed the garden and our Office of Environmental Health and Safety team is investigating."

She added that all school gardens will now be inspected for potential hazards.

Fujii spoke to one parent who was pleased with how quickly the district dealt with the issue.

"The kids love it. It's a wonderful addition. I don't know of many schools in LA that have a garden so we want to get it resolved right away and have the kids get back to the garden," said Christina Rivera.

Though it's not completely clear how sick the affected students became, Rivera said she's not worried at all about her daughter going back in.
