Police Searching For Killer Of Deaf High School Basketball Star

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Desean Welch, 18, was in Moreno Valley near Rancho Verde High School with three deaf friends when a man approached their car asking questions, last Friday night.

Welch's friend tried to let the man know they're deaf.

His friend who was driving the car wrote the man a text that read: "We are deaf, can't hear you, don't understand what you're saying to us."

According to police, the man shot at the car, killing the teen.

Welch was a student at the California School For The Deaf.

His family describes Welch as a basketball star with a bright future and definitely not a gang member. His dream was to go to USC on a scholarship and play in the NBA.
