HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — A man was killed Friday when he was struck by a vehicle on the 405 Freeway in Hawthorne.

The crash was reported at 1:20 a.m. on the northbound lanes at El Segundo Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement.

At this time, it remains unclear why the man was on the freeway.

Northbound lanes were shut down until just after 4 a.m., officials said.

The incident remains under investigation.
