BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A stolen car suspect who fled from officers has been killed on the 101 Freeway in Boyle Heights, police said Wednesday.

The chase began after 3 a.m. when officers noticed a stolen SUV driving erratically in East Los Angeles.

According to police, the 25-year-old driver traveled at more than 100 miles per hour on the northbound 5 Freeway.

The chase continued onto the northbound 101 Freeway.

The suspect exited the freeway on 4th Street, ran a red light and crashed into a tree.

When officers attempted to detain him, he fled on foot onto the freeway and was struck by another vehicle.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The driver who struck the suspect was shaken, but not seriously injured.

Northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway remained closed until 6 a.m., KNX 1070's Jon Baird reported.

During a search of the SUV, drugs, cell phones and credit cards were found, CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
