Person Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash Following Attempted Traffic Stop Of Stolen Car

CULVER CITY (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities said one person was killed in a hit-and- run crash that stemmed from an attempted traffic stop in Culver City Saturday morning.

The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. on Washington Boulevard at La Cienega Boulevard, according to police.

Officers tried to stop a vehicle with no license plates but the driver fled and accelerated through an intersection against a red light, police said.

Later, police also said the vehicle with no plates had been stolen.

The stolen car hit the victim's vehicle causing a fatality. Another person in the victim's car was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A 17-year-old female who was allegedly driving the stolen car -- as well as three passengers -- ran from the scene but all were quickly apprehended and taken into custody. Some of the four sustained non-life threatening injuries, police said.

One of the suspect's attempted to run into a gas station and asked to use the restroom in an attempt to elude authorities. Police arrested the man inside the restroom.

KCAL9's Laurie Perez said while the victim has not been publicly or officially identified, friends of the man told her he was a 20-something father of two young boys.

Friends also told Perez the man lived just around the corner from the accident.

Video of the wreckage, the man's black BMW all but caved in, spoke to the evidence of the force of the crash.

The victim was driving with his 8-year-old son. Witnesses saw the boy sobbing but said he was able to walk away from the accident. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Dylan Sage was working nearby when he said he heard the unmistakable sounds of a horrific accident, the explosion of metal on metal.

"No brakes, screeching, nothing. Just straight up really bad impact. I came running out, I didn't know what it was. I hear accidents all the time, nothing that crazy. It was pretty bad."

Sage said the suspect's were eager to get away.

"They jumped out of the car before the car even stopped," he said.
