Meteor Showers To Produce Spectacular Sky Show

LYTLE CREEK (CBSLA.com) — Campers in Lytle Creek are gearing up for what's expected to be a spectacular show in the night sky.

One of the brightest, most intense Perseid meteor showers in years will happen in the dark hours early Friday morning.

Experts at UC Riverside say you could see up to 500 shooting stars per hour. The Perseid meteor showers happen every year around this time. The earth goes through dust made of up of comets and that dust comes into our atmosphere and burns up, causing shooting stars.

What makes this year's shower even more active has to do with that comet dust. Jupiter's gravity has pulled it closer to earth, upping the number of shooting stars.

If you're in a dark area you may start seeing activity right now.

It'll be at its best around midnight and will continue until just before sunrise and there's a chance we could see another meteor shower like this early Saturday morning.
