Man Killed By LA County Deputy Wasn't Involved In Carjacking

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says there's no evidence a man fatally shot by a deputy last month in Compton was connected to a carjacking suspect who had opened fire on deputies.

The department said Tuesday that deputies encountered 27-year-old Donnell Thompson shortly after the carjacking suspect crashed, fled into a neighborhood and was arrested July 28.

After a resident's 911 call, deputies spotted Thompson lying in a yard with one hand concealed from view. According to the department statement, the deputies were concerned that he may have been connected to the carjacking suspect.

The department says Thompson was unresponsive to numerous commands, but when he finally stood, he charged at the deputies, one of whom believed he was armed and fired at Thompson.

Thompson's sister, Antoinette Brown, described her brother as introverted and likely paralyzed by fear by all the deputies approaching him.

"I'm hurt," Brown sobbed. "I wonder why they had to take someone very special to me. He was very kind, he was kind hearted. That was my love."

Thompson's family said they would be speaking to the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors to ask for more accountability on the use of deadly force.

A sheriff's statement said the department is continuing an "exhaustive review" of the shooting.

The deputy who fired at Thompson has been reassigned to non-field duties.
