Former LAPD Volunteer Arrested On Suspicion Of Fatally Stabbing His Stepson

SIMI VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday arrested a former Los Angeles Police Department civilian volunteer on suspicion of fatally stabbing his stepson in Simi Valley.

The incident unfolded Thursday night around 11:25 p.m. at a home located in the 2200 block of N. Hietter Ave for report of a family dispute, according to the Simi Valley Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities located a deceased man inside of the home.

The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Kelley Hughes.

Hughes' stepfather, Howard Novak, 62, was arrested at the scene. Police have not clarified what charges he will face.

Police said Novak stabbed Hughes in the abdomen and chest with a knife. Authorities also said Novak was arrested without incident.
