Detectives Investigate Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting In Castaic

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in Castaic.

The incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 31500 block of Castaic Road  near Lake Hughes Road, according to authorities.

A preliminary investigation revealed deputies attempted to make contact with a man who was riding a bicycle.

The man fled on foot from the area and deputies followed him, eventually making contact.

A deputy-involved shooting subsequently occurred.

The male suspect was struck in his upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

No deputies sustained injuries during the incident.

A woman staying at the Rodeway Inn told CBS2's Jasmine Viel she witnessed deputies shoot her friend, a homeless man in his 50s, who had just left her motel room with a bag of toiletries. The man was shot after he crashed his bike even though he had his arms at his side.

The events that lead up to the shooting remain under investigation.
