Search For 3 Fontana Teens Who Went Missing While Hiking May Be Over

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — The search for the three Fontana teens who disappeared Saturday while hiking may be over.

By Monday afternoon, a white pickup truck matching the description of the teens' was located over the edge of the Angeles Crest Highway. There were no survivors.

"She was like my daughter. She's my sister but I practically raised her," said Isabel Ornelas, the sister of one of missing teens, 17-year-old Samantha Ornelas.

She wasn't sure if her sister was alive or dead.

Samantha, along with 19-year-old Daniel Gamboa and 18-year-old Kasey Vance told their families they were going hiking in the Angeles National Forest Saturday, and hadn't been heard from since.

Earlier in the day, Fontana police held a news conference and revealed that on Sunday, one of the teen's credit cards was used and a cellphone had pinged.

But family members held out hope they were OK. As news broke, though, that the truck appeared to have been found, that hope quickly disappeared.

"She's such a smart girl. I mean, she should have not went in the [expletive] car," Ornelas said. "I knew it. I knew it."

One of Samantha's uncles said he recognized the truck and the emblem on the tailgate. Even so, some relatives were holding out hope.

"I think she's somewhere, crying for help," said a relative of Samantha's. "And I hope we find her."

Late Monday, as family members left the Fontana police station, they were too distraught to speak to reporters, telling police they are now accepting their loved ones are gone.

Meanwhile, crews were working to hoist the truck up, and positively identify the bodies. Official confirmation of the identities of the deceased may not happen until Tuesday, according to Fontana police.
