Deputies Shoot At 2 Suspects, Killing 1, In Compton

COMPTON (CBSLA.com/AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's officials say deputies shot at two suspects, killing one, within hours overnight in Compton and investigators are trying to determine if the two incidents are related.

Lt. John Corina says a stolen-car suspect opened fire on deputies during a vehicle pursuit around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

In photographs provided by deputies, bullets had hit a patrol car. Deputies returned fire but nobody was hit.

The suspect got out of the car and ran into a neighborhood, where he was eventually tracked down and arrested.

During the search, deputies found a man they thought matched the description of the suspected gunman.

"He got up and he ran toward the SWAT officers, charged at the SWAT officers," said Corina.

SWAT officers shot and killed that man, who was in his 20s, around 5:30 a.m. It's unclear whether he was connected to the crimes or armed. His name wasn't released. A weapon has not been recovered.

"One of the neighbors was walking down the street and she was saying that, 'He's not gonna shot. He doesn't have a gun,' " said Lori Thomas.

For most of the day, residents couldn't come in and out of a perimeter that authorities had set-up for their investigation.

Both shootings are under investigation.
