Couple Says Grandson Scammed Them Out Of Their Home

THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) — Helen Kawecki said she never dreamed that she would have to leave the Thousand Oaks home she and her husband have been living in for more than five decades.

The couple in their late 80s will be evicted Monday after their grandson sold their house without telling them, the Kaweckis claimed.

Hank Kawecki said it's worse than the ultimate betrayal. "It's kind of bad. It's your own family," he sighed.

It was the couple's neighbor who broke the sad news to them. "They came down with some computer work, and they said: 'Your house is for sale.' I said: 'No, it's not.' "

The Kaweckis said their grandson lured them out of their house at times, and while they were gone, realtors showed their property to potential buyers.

Neighbor Doug Emerson found out it was much worse. "They signed their deed to their grandson two years ago. He took out two loans on it for $425,000. He later refinanced those for another third. And then he just defaulted on everything."

Emerson said the grandson promised to support the couple for the rest of their lives.

The couple said when they signed over the deed they didn't read, they thought they were signing off on a loan to help their grandson make ends meet.

"I didn't think that my grandson would do that to me," Helen said sadly. "He would be the last person."

The Kaweckis were forced to pack up decades of memory to move out of the home in which they have lived for 56 years.

The couple has filed a lawsuit against their grandson, who is not facing criminal charges so far.

A gofundme account has been set up to help the Kaweckis, who have no money and no place to live.
