Crews Gain Ground On Fire Near Lake Sherwood In Ventura County

LAKE SHERWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Crews made progress Wednesday in knocking down a brush fire reported at nearly 80 acres in the Lake Sherwood area of Ventura County.

No structures were immediately threatened and the fire burned in light to medium brush, Ventura County Fire Department Capt Mike Lindbery said.

The department requested air tankers that quickly began to fight flames from the air.

About 375 firefighters battled the blaze in rugged, dry terrain rimmed by dangerous power lines, along with four air tankers, 12 hand crews, 16 engines, two dozers and two helicopters, Lindbery said.

No evacuations were ordered, but many who live nearly, including Stewart Turner, were ready to go at a moment's notice.

"We have two dogs and a cat, so obviously were keeping a close eye on everything," Turner said.

He's lived in the area for two decades and dealt with brush fires before but never any that got this close.

"Thank God the fire service have always done a great job of protecting the homes and everything," Turner said.

Fire crews were expected to remain through the night to knock down hot spots. No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire that began about 4 p.m. remains under investigation.
