Snapchat Video Shows Aftermath Of Fireworks Accident That Caused Teen To Lose Portion Of Hand

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Footage posted to Snapchat shows the aftermath of a fireworks accident in Long Beach that will likely change the course of a teenager's life.

Witnesses say the accident involving a 17-year-old Monday happened in an alley behind an apartment complex off 17th Street and Lemon Avenue

It was there that firefighters say the teen lost part of his hand playing with fireworks.

"At first, when I heard it, it sounded like a horror movie or something," said Julio Sinay, who heard the commotion.

He, however, didn't realize the situation was serious as fireworks were going off all over the neighborhood.

"I didn't really think anything of it because, you know, fireworks and people screaming and stuff like that. But, uh, I barely found out that somebody got hurt," he said.

It's still unclear how the teen was injured and whether the firework he was handling misfired, or possibly something else.

Whatever the case, neighbors say police couldn't keep up with all of the illegal fireworks going off throughout the night.

As for the teen, friends say he was alert when paramedics treated him at the scene.

He was then rushed to the hospital. As of Tuesday night, he was reported to be in stable condition.

Meanwhile, firefighters in Long Beach say they seized over 500 pounds of illegal fireworks between July 1st and July 4th.
