UPDATE: Dodgers' Ace Clayton Kershaw Headed To 15-Day DL; Won't Require Surgery

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is headed to the 15-day disabled list after he received an epidural for pain in his lower back.

Kershaw was sent back to L.A. Wednesday during the team's current road trip to have his back examined after he experienced discomfort this past Sunday while pitching against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Dodgers have not yet decided who will take his scheduled start this Friday, but according to the team website Carlos Frias is the leading candidate if they decide to stick with their bullpen guys.

Baseball's best pitcher would be eligible to come off the disabled list during the All-Star Break, meaning his first eligible start would be July 15 at Arizona.

However, reports show that manager Dave Roberts is skeptical about a timely return for the ace.

The team announced that Kershaw will not require surgery on his back.

He has been diagnosed with a herniated disk in his lower back.

The timeline for his return is still unknown.
