Facebook Tweaks News Feed To Highlight Posts From Friends, Not Publishers

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — Facebook has once again tweaked the formula it uses to decide what people will see in their news feed — and this time, it's personal.

The social media giant says it updated the news feed so that people will see more posts from their friends and family and not, say, the New York Times or Buzzfeed.

Facebook says it will now put posts from friends and family that users are "likely to care about" at the top of their news feed. Over time, the algorithm adapts and learns from your behavior. So if you "like" or comment on your sister's posts often, you'll see more posts from her.

"Facebook was built on the idea of connecting people with their friends and family. That is still the driving principle of News Feed today," Facebook said in a statement announcing the changes. "Our top priority is keeping you connected to the people, places and things you want to be connected to — starting with the people you are friends with on Facebook."

Facebook regularly updates the algorithm that decides what posts users see. How much users interact with the posts help influence the changes.
