Man Dies After Confrontation With Officers At McDonalds In Burbank

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Police say a man who shot at officers after causing a disturbance inside a McDonalds restaurant in Burbank died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident happened at McDonalds, 2565 Hollywood Way, near the Burbank Airport early Friday morning, Burbank police spokesman Sgt. Claudio Losacco said.

Officers were called out to a report of a disturbance inside the empty restaurant and found a man with a handgun, Losacco said. After evacuating the restaurant of its employees, the officers tried to speak to the gunman, who police say opened fire on them.

At least three officers opened fire on the gunman, who then climbed out a shattered window, went to the driveway and shot himself, Losacco said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The gunman was not an employee or a former employee, and there was no indication the suspect knew any of the employees inside the restaurant at the time of the disturbance, Losacco said. It's not known why the gunman came to this particular McDonalds.

Friday afternoon Burbank Police identified the deceased as 29-year-old Lee Edward Denney of Tennessee. Authorities believe Denney was a transient.

Officials said Denney had an outstanding no-bail felony arrest warrant for aggravated burglary and domestic assault out of Maury County, Tennessee.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the investigation, Losacco said.

Anyone who was present during the incident or might have information related to the shooting is asked to contact Detective Emil Brimway at (818) 238-3210 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
