Cooler Temperatures Help Firefighters Hold Line On San Gabriel Complex Fire
AZUSA (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters are holding the line on the San Gabriel Complex fire, helped in part by cooler weather and higher humidity.
The fire, made up of the Reservoir Fire above Azusa and the Fish Fire above Duarte, have burned a combined 5,267 acres, but is 30 percent contained. US Forest officials say 1,256 firefighters are currently battling the fires, which have not yet merged, but are burning about 1.5 miles apart from each other.
As of noon, evacuation orders were lifted, but access will still be restricted to residents only, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Residents returning to their homes in the forest area will only be able to access their neighborhoods by using East Fork Road because Highway 39 remains closed.
Livestock will not be allowed to return until 8 a.m. Saturday.
The Chantry Flats Recreational Area was closed Friday due to the fire danger.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory because of the blazes, urging residents in smoke-affected areas to avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Those with respiratory or heart disease, older adults and children were advised to remain indoors.
