Good Samaritan Hit With $143 Bill After Saving Family Trapped In Overturned Van
SACRAMENTO (CBSLA.com) — A good Samaritan in California is facing a bill after he helped free a family trapped in an overturned minivan.
Derrick Deanda took a photograph of the rollover crash in Elk Grove, which is located just south of the state capitol of Sacramento.
He broke the glass to free a man and his three children who were trapped inside.
Everyone was OK but a few weeks later he got a bill in the mail in the amount of $143 for a "first responder fee."
Deputy Chief Mike McLaughlin says Deanda became a patient when a paramedic looked at a small cut he suffered from breaking the van's window.
Deanda can appeal the fee and has a good chance of winning.
Even McLaughlin says he'd like to see the fee waived.
