Crane Falls At ExxonMobil Refinery; Minor Injuries Reported

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — Three people suffered minor injuries Monday after a crane toppled over at a ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance, officials said.

The 300-ton crane fell on some refinery equipment shortly after 9:30 a.m. at the refinery at 3700 W. 190th Street, authorities said.

Flammable gas as a result of the crane fall was suppressed by water monitors and there was no offsite impact due to the fall, Battalion Chief Robert Millea of the Torrance Fire Department said.

The injured were not taken to the hospital, according to Millea.

The Torrance Fire Department conducted flaring - the burning of natural gas that cannot be processed or sold - to safely stabilize operations, officials said.

An explosion last year shut down the Torrance refinery for more than a year.
