Southern California To Get Hit With Triple-Digit Heat This Weekend

CLAREMONT (CBSLA.com) — Parts of Southern California will experience scorching, triple-digit temperatures this weekend ahead of the first official day of summer.

Members of the U.S. Forest Service say they're preparing for the scorching temperatures which, according to the National Weather Service, is expected Sunday through Tuesday.

"We're all staffed up," said Kurt Yearout of the U.S. Forest Service. "We have all our seasonal firefighters on. We're prepared every day, been training, have all out training done and we're ready to go."

Monday, according to the NWS, was anticipated to be the hottest day across much of the region, the agency indicated on its Facebook page.

"We're just taking advantage of this cool weather because it's gonna be hot, it's gonna be very hot this coming week," said Randy Montanez, a Rancho Cucamonga resident.

And he's wasn't alone.

Richard Kerney said he's playing some ball at the park while he can. But, he said, in a few days, he won't be sticking around Rancho Cucamonga.

"Huntington Beach has some nice parks down there so I'm gonna try to get down there and cool off," said Kerney

Nearby, on the playground, Scott Williams of Alta Loma said the heat has changed his Father's Day weekend plans.

"I was gonna go to Lake Havasu where it was gonna be about 105 but now it's gonna be 120, so no, not anymore," he said.

But for Ashely Warner, she says her family plans to eat cool treats and stay close to home to beat the heat.

"Stay inside, you just entertain the kids inside. Movies, go to the movie theaters, walk around indoor malls," she said.

The NWS says excessive heat watches have been posted for many interior sections. For more information, click here.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service says, because of the high fire danger, residents are urged not to start campfires in the forest and dispose of cigarettes properly. Those clearing brush around the house are asked to exercise caution when using machinery that may spark a fire.
