Names Of Thousands Of Veterans Buried At Cemetery In Riverside Read During Ceremony

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — The names of thousand veterans buried at a cemetery in Riverside were read during a ceremony Sunday.

It took volunteers six hours to read off the names of the 5,000 veterans that have been buried at the Riverside National Cemetery within the last 12 months.

They are just a handful of the 200,000 veterans being remembered here.

"I think it's a great honor for the service he did," said Cheryl Decker, whose brother is buried at the cemetery and died a few months ago. "He was in Vietnam."

Ellie and Richard Bennett were just two of the dozens of volunteers who read names Sunday.

"They need to be recognized. They need to be remembered." Bennett said. "We've lost so many of them. As a mom, I wanna make sure they're remember. I wanna be a part of it."

Though Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those who died while serving, it has also become a way to honor all veterans who have passed on.

"Without the sacrifices from the beginning of U.S. history, we wouldn't be here today enjoying the things that we've got," said Richard Bennett, a volunteer.
