2 Arrested On Suspicion Of Killing Man During Illegal Street Race In Lake Elsinore

LAKE ELSINORE (CBSLA.com) — Two illegal street racers were in custody Wednesday after allegedly killing a man in Lake Elsinore.

Just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were sent to the area of Railroad Canyon and Church roads for report of a major injury traffic collision, according to the Lake Elsinore Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities located one car with debris and evidence completely blocking both sides of the roadway.

A passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later identified the victim as Joseph Paul Castro Jr., 19, of Las Vegas.

A preliminary investigation revealed Rick Koesy, 18, of Menifee, engaged in an illegal street race with Jacob Frederickson, 19, of Murrieta, which subsequently lead to the deadly collision.

"While engaged in the illegal street race, Koesy lost control of his vehicle and struck a light pole," Sgt. Nathan Kaas said.

Police arrested Koesy on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and DUI causing injury.

Frederickson was later arrested at his home on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter.

Both men are being held at the Southwest Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this case has been urged to contact the Lake Elsinore Police Department at (951) 245-3300.
