Company Expands Voluntary Recall Of Frozen Fruits, Vegetables Over Listeria Concerns

PASCO, Wa. (CBSLA.com) — A Washington-based company is expanding its voluntary recall of frozen fruits and vegetables over concerns the products may be contaminated with listeria.

CRF Frozen Foods announced the expanded recall Monday stating that it was working with both the with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."

"This expanded recall of frozen vegetables includes all of the frozen organic and traditional fruit and vegetable products manufactured or processed in CRF Frozen Foods' Pasco facility since May 1, 2014," the FDA said in a news release.

The FDA says the recalled items have the best by dates or sell by dates between April 26, 2016 and April 26, 2018. Approximately 358 consumer products sold under 42 brands were being impacted.

"Products include organic and non-organic broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, cauliflower, corn, edamame, green beans, Italian beans, kale, leeks, lima beans, onions, peas, pepper strips, potatoes, potato medley, root medley, spinach, sweet potatoes, various vegetable medleys, blends, and stir fry packages, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, peaches, raspberries, and strawberries," the FDA said.

The company in late April had announced the recall of fifteen frozen vegetable items after routine testing by state health officials discovered the presence of listeria monocytogenes in organic petite green peas and white sweet cut corn.

Listeria infections, according to the FDA, can cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea in those who are healthy. Among pregnant women, listeria infections though can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The FDA said the products being recalled may have been bought in states across the U.S. and all retailers who received the products have been contacted.

"CDC has informed CRF Frozen Foods that the government has identified seven people from three states who became ill and were hospitalized due to Listeria," according to the FDA. "Some of these illnesses have been linked to consuming CRF-manufactured or processed products."

Of those sickened, the FDA says two of the individuals later died, though Listeria was not the cause of death in either person.
