5 Hurt When Car Slams Into Torrance Gym

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com)  —  As many as five people were hurt when a car slammed into a Planet Fitness gym in Torrance just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

KCAL9's Andrea Fujii reported from the scene.

Officials told her the woman who rammed into the facility mistook the gas pedal for the brake.

She had been parked just in front of the facility when the accident occurred.

Authorities said the people who were hurt are expected to survive their injuries.

The woman was described as in her 70s. She was not hurt.

The unidentified motorist drove about 50 feet into the gym.

When paramedics arrived, one person was still on top of the car's hood.

One woman who heard the crash said the noise was attention-grabbing.

"It just sounded like an explosion," Monica said, "It sounded like an explosion of glass. Basically, the car came through so fast, we didn't even see the car. And then the car hit the wall. It went straight through the warm-up area, where the ab machines are, and people are warming up on the floor. It just plowed right over them."

After the crash, there was a note on the business saying it would be closed "until Friday."

Because the driver said it was an accident, she was not cited.
