Car Shears Fire Hydrant, Causing Geyser In Valley Glen

VALLEY GLEN (CBSLA.com) — A driver slammed into a fire hydrant Monday, causing a big watery mess in the San Fernando Valley.

A silver Hyundai Elantra sheared the fireplug off the concrete sidewalk at Burbank Boulevard and Woodman Avenue in Valley Glen around 10:30 a.m. and plowed into the front of Mission Wine & Spirits.

The crash broke the liquor store's two large windows and sent water gushing about 60 feet into the air. A couple other shops sustained minimal flooding.

Firefighters had to dig 8 feet deep below the ground to find the valve to shut off the water. It took them nearly 90 minutes to turn off the geyser.

The driver of the Hyundai was not hurt.

CBS2/KCAL9's Dave Lopez reported that there were no skid marks, so police do not believe the driver was speeding.
