LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Los Angeles man is accused of stealing more than $400,000 in Social Security benefits intended for his father and former stepmother.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday that 68-year-old Jose Aguinaco Ugalde was indicted last week on multiple counts of grand theft and identity theft. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney.
Ugalde is accused of perpetuating the largest fraud among 22 defendants snared in a federal investigation that uncovered years-long thefts of Social Security benefits.
Ugalde is due in court next month. He could face more than five years in prison if convicted.
