Massive Fire Destroys At Least 15 Cars At Recycling Yard In Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say multiple cars were engulfed in flames by a fire that erupted at a recycling yard in Sun Valley.

The blaze erupted at Pick Your Parts, a junkyard, about 3:50 p.m. Sunday in the 9000 block of N. Tujunga Avenue.

It took more than 150 firefighters more than two hours to extinguish the massive blaze.

At its height, it was considered a "major emergency fire," prompting firefighters to go in defensive mode.

Erik Scott with the Los Angeles Fire Department said at least 15 cars had been engulfed in flames.

KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner reported the smoke could be seen for miles.

Those who were closer stood on top of trucks or SUVS to get a better vantage point.

Daniel Robles was close to the fire, perhaps too close. He was in the junkyard when the fire erupted.

"We just some like explosions," Robles said, "so what I did was, I got on top of a car and saw the fire and so I told my dad and then everybody got on their cars."

No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

While investigators don't believe anything toxic was burning, they are working with hazardous materials experts to make sure the air and water are okay.
