Man Fatally Stabbed On Metro Station Platform In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday arrested an assailant who allegedly stabbed a man to death on a train station platform in Long Beach.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the stabbing took place around 2:00 a.m. at Metro's Blue Line Wardlow Station, located in the 3400 block of North Pacific Place.

"Transit Policing Division deputies were patrolling the Wardlow Blue Line station platform and came upon two men involved in a physical altercation," said Deputy Grace Medrano. "One of the men was laying injured on the ground, when the other realized deputy personnel were present, he fled the scene towards West Wardlow Road."

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted knife wound. He remains listed in critical condition at this time.

Deputies said the station will remain closed until further notice.

Northbound trains will be turned away at Metro's Willow Station and southbound trains will divert at the Del Amo stop during the investigation.

Bus bridges will run from the Del Amo, Wardlow and Willow stations. Portions of the lines are closed.

The investigation is ongoing.
