Waze Navigation App Teams Up With Caltrans In LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Transportation agency officials announced Wednesday that Caltrans is partnering with operators of the Waze navigation app to provide insight on traffic patterns.

Under the partnership, Caltrans will provide information about road conditions and closures. In return, Waze will share reports about road hazards, such as potholes and collisions, that are contributed by its users.

"Combining the real-time anonymous data from Waze, sourced from drivers themselves, with Caltrans' vast network of traffic management systems is a win-win for California drivers," Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said.

Officials said other types of data, such as speed limits, could be added in the future.

The intent is to fill any gaps that exist in information already shared through partnerships with the city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

According to Waze, around 1.7 million users in the Los Angeles area provide upwards of 2.5 million pothole and accident alerts per month.
