Massive Basking Shark Spotted Off Palos Verdes Coast

RANCHO PALOS VERDES (CBSLA.com) — A massive basking shark was spotted in the waters off the Palos Verdes coast on Sunday.

YouTube user Nicole Smith posted a video online, saying she and other whale watchers spotted the shark off the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles aboard the Triumphant, operated by Harbor Breeze Cruises.

Additional photos and videos were posted to Harbor Breeze Cruises' Facebook page.

The shark was spotted on two Triumphant cruises Sunday and estimated to be 28 feet long, GrindTV reported.

Basking sharks are the second largest fish species, behind the whale shark, growing to as long as 40 feet.

The sharks are filter feeders and their diet is comprised of plankton. The sharks pose no risk to humans.

Basking sharks have been found throughout the world's cold and temperate seas, though rarely in Southern California.
