Woman Finds The Home She Owns Listed For Rent On Craigslist

HESPERIA (CBSLA.com) — One family was thrilled when a Craigslist ad showed a beautiful home for rent in Hesperia at a great price.

But their excitement quickly faded when they realized they may have been ripped off.

The ad was asking for $1,100 and promised an "intimate and peaceful home."

It sounded like a deal to Samantha Sari.

"It's a rent-to-own, and we were like, 'Oh, my gosh! Yes'" she said.

In fact, the ad indicated that it was "perfect for a family," so Sari called.

"They asked for $40 and I said, 'Oh, OK,' so I gave them my credit card information," she said.

The problem? Lourdes Guerrero owns the home.

She bought it in July 2012 and provided loan documents to prove it.

She says it's not for rent or sale. Period.

"I got scared," Guerrero said. "I'm like, 'Why would anyone put that on there?' "

One thing the ad left out was the home address, which Guerrero says she is thankful for.

"This is where I'm supposed to feel safe with my kids," she said. "I don't need random people coming here. That's scary."

A friend showed Guerrero the ad. She called and says the man on the other end went silent when she told him she was the homeowner.

When CBS2 called to inquire as to whether the business used the wrong home photo, the number stated, "This mailbox is full."

"Be careful, be cautious of the information you are sharing," said Guerrero.

Both women encouraged renters to do their homework before giving anyone money.
