Hours-Long Standoff Ends With Arrest Of Man Suspected In Deadly Chino Hills Shooting

CHINO HILLS (CBSLA.com) — An hours-long standoff came to an end Tuesday with the arrest of a man suspected in a deadly shooting in Chino Hills.

Dramatic video captured the end of a four-hour barricade situation, which unfolded just before 4 p.m. in the 4300 block of Val Verde Avenue.

The footage captured images of the unidentified man suspected of shooting another man dead and then hiding inside his home.

Detectives say they talked to the man on the phone twice and believe that likely helped him to surrender. He was taken into custody by a group of SWAT team members.

"Very calm people, very calm family," said Alex Morales, a neighbor. "We didn't expect that."

Dave Roberts, an off-duty firefighter, said he was outside mowing his lawn when he heard three gunshots and ran over to the neighbor's home to help.

"I went into the house, told my family to lock the door. I grabbed the little medical bag that I went to the lot and I found the patient down," said Roberts. "Worked on him, gave him some CPR and tried to stop the bleeding and stuff but there wasn't much we could do."

Roberts called 911 and also asked another neighbor to assist with chest compressions.

"It's kind of a blur right now," said another neighbor. "Nerve racking."

The victim died.

A school bus driver, whose route travels through the area, was shocked that something like this would happen on a street normally busy with children.

"It's getting crazy over here in Chino Hills," said Regina Fuentes, the driver. "It's sad that the kids can't come out and play. This is just sad."

Meantime, neighbors say the deadly dispute was possibly over pesticide spray.

"There was a guy that would go over to the lot where the body was found and would spray for pesticides and weeds and I guess maybe he didn't want the guy to spray," said Morales.

Homicide investigators planned to remain on scene throughout the night leaving some residents unable to access the area.
