Officials Identify 20-Year-Old Man Killed In Drive-By Shooting In Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives Monday continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 20-year-old man that took place in Hawthorne.

According to the Hawthorne Police Department, officers were sent shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday to the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue for report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned suspects traveling in a dark colored sedan pulled up alongside a vehicle carrying four people and opened fire.

The driver of the victim's vehicle was struck by gunfire in his upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office later identified the victim as William Fifita, of Adelanto. A GoFundMe account has been set up online. To donate, click here.

Paramedics transported two adult men to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to their upper torsos. An update on their conditions was not immediately available.

Police said a fourth passenger, an adult woman, did not sustain injuries in the shooting.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victims were returning from a church function in Torrance when the shooting took place.

The suspects fled from the scene on Rosecrans Avenue. A description has not been provided.

The investigation is ongoing.
