LA Officials Urge Fingerprint Checks Of Ride-Hailing Drivers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The mayor of Los Angeles and two City Council members ask the state Public Utilities Commission for permission to start a pilot program that would require fingerprint background checks of ride-hailing, limousine, van and shuttle service drivers.

The city currently requires taxi drivers to submit to fingerprint background checks.

Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilmen Herb Wesson and Paul Krekorian sent a joint letter to the PUC on Thursday.

The letter describes existing background checks used by the transportation companies as "opaque" and says that is "a cause for concern for the riding public."
