Boy Recovering After Being Stabbed By Classmate At Boyle Heights Elementary School
BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A Boyle Heights fifth grader was recovering Friday after being stabbed by a classmate at his school.
According to Los Angeles Unified School District police, the incident took place around 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bridge Street Elementary School, located in the 600 block of North Boyle Avenue.
Parents said the stabbing took place during recess on the school playground.
Paramedics transported the boy to County USC Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to the Los Angeles City Fire Department. At this time, he remains listed in stable condition.
One child was detained at the scene, police said. He is being held at juvenile hall on an attempted murder charge. Officers said the charge will likely be dropped to assault with a deadly weapon because of his age.
A judge will determine if the boy accused in the stabbing will be released back to his parents or remain in custody.
Police have not released the names of either of the boys due to the fact that they are minors.
School officials sent a letter home to parents confirming another fifth grader was accused of stabbing his classmate with a pocketknife.
LAUSD Superintendent Michelle King released a written statement that reads in part: "The entire L.A. Unified family is saddened by the tragic incident involving two students at Bridges Elementary School yesterday. Student safety is paramount and remains our top priority. Our thoughts go out to the entire school community, especially the victim."
The school district is providing support for students and staff while the investigation continues, King added.
The motive for the stabbing remains under investigation.
