4 People Were Swept Into Ocean In Redondo Beach, 1 Dies

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Three people remained hospitalized Thursday after being swept into the ocean in Redondo Beach.

Multiple witnesses called 911 around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday reporting there were people in the ocean screaming for help, said Redondo Beach Fire Division Chief Mark Winter.

When Harbor Patrol arrived, they found two men and two women in the water at the base of the break wall.

During the rescue, more waves washed the victims and rescuers back into sea twice before the rescue team was able to pull the four victims out of the water, Winter said.

One of them, a man, was pronounced dead by paramedics. The other three were listed in serious condition.

A high surf advisory warning of big waves and strong rip currents went remains in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday.
