Speed Possible Factor In Deadly Single-Vehicle Fiery Rollover Crash Near MacArthur Park

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  Speed was the likely cause of a fiery single-vehicle crash near MacArthur Park Saturday morning that killed the 26-year-old female driver, officials said.

The victim's car also overturned after crashing around 2:05 a.m. in the area of 7th Street and South Lake Streets, according to Sgt. Fanielle Wells, watch commander at Central Traffic Division.

"The driver was going west on 7th Street and just past Lake Street she apparently lost control of her car and first hit a light pole," Wells said.

"The force of the crash sent her careening into a nearby building and then into a U-Haul truck," Wells added.

At that point, Wells said, the vehicle overturned and started to ignite.

Police officers on scene tried to put a small fire out with an extinguisher. The car burst into flames after the officers managed to pull the woman out of the car first, Wells added.

The 26-year-old victim -- now identified as Brittany Baker of Los Angeles -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
