Father, Son Arrested For Alleged Assault On Huntington Beach Police Officer

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A father and his 23-year-old son have been arrested on suspicion of attacking a Huntington Beach police officer, police said Wednesday.

The alleged attack occurred around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday when a 17-year veteran Huntington Beach Police officer stopped a bicyclist for a traffic violation near Beach Boulevard and Clay Avenue, according to Huntington Beach Police Officer Jennifer Marlatt.

At some point during the stop, the bicyclist's father came up from behind the officer and punched him in the head, Marlatt said.

The officer unsuccessfully attempted to defend himself with a stun gun and was then pummeled by the two suspects, who punched and kicked the victim in the head, according to Marlatt.

A woman who was on a police ride-along got out of the car and shouted at the men to stop, and they rode away from the crime scene, Marlatt said.

Several officers responded to the scene and arrested 58-year-old Darryl Headrick of Huntington Beach a short time later in the immediate area, Marlatt said.

Bryce Headrick, also of Huntington Beach, was arrested several hours later, she said.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released the same day, Marlatt said.

The two men were being held in the Huntington Beach jail, where they were booked on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and resisting arrest, Marlatt said.
