Rare Video Of Only Known Wild Jaguar In U.S. Is Released

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Video of the only known wild jaguar in the U.S. has been released by a cat conservation group.

The Conservation CATalyst and the Center for Biological Diversity released the video, which shows the big cat named El Jefe or The Boss roaming the mountains just outside Tucson, Arizona.

The cat is about 7 years old.

The group released the clip taken last fall because they say a proposed copper mine would destroy El Jefe's habitat.

Jaguars once roamed the southwest, but disappeared 150 years ago.

The Los Angeles Zoo said on its website that the jaguar is the world's third largest cat and are "near threatened."

The story was trending in Los Angeles Wednesday.
