Mexican Actress Kate Del Castillo Under Investigation On Suspicion Of Money Laundering

WESTLAKE DISTRICT (CBSLA.com) — A handful of fans held signs outside of the Mexican consulate Monday in support of actress Kate del Castillo, who is under investigation on suspicion of money laundering in Mexico.

This comes after the arrest of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the suspected drug lord, who was recently interviewed by Sean Penn, after an introduction by del Castillo.

Miguel Lopez, a fan of del Castillo, who says he's met the actress about 10 times, explains that he took a picture with her in 2011 in West Hollywood.

He waited outside of the consulate following reports that she would have to testify.

"If we see her we want to show her our respect, our support, and our love for her," he said.

Del Castillo is under investigation over accusations that she took money El Chapo to fund her tequila business and setting up the Sean Penn interview which has been a source of embarrassment for the Mexican government.

"That's what people say, that the Mexican government hates that Kate del Castillo found El Chapo first," said Ricardo Manjarrez, an entertainment correspondent for the Mexican network, TV Azteca.

In addition to being one of Mexico's biggest stars, del Castillo has credits on IMDb for American TV shows "Telenovela" and "Jane the Virgin," but she hasn't given any interviews since the release of Sean Penn's article in Rolling Stone magazine.

"Now she's like hiding and everybody is looking for her so it makes it more interesting," Manjarrez said.

A source at the consulate told CBS2 that del Castillo -- who has dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico -- wouldn't appear Monday, but wouldn't say if her attorneys could speak on her behalf.

CBS2 reached out to her representatives for comment, but haven't heard back.
