Canyon Country Man Faces Charges Of Assault, Child Cruelty

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 29-year-old man accused of injuring a deputy and barricading himself inside a Canyon Country bedroom with his two young children was charged Monday with assault, holding hostages and child cruelty.

Calvin Charles Lynch is facing three counts of assault upon a peace officer, two counts of false imprisonment of a hostage and two counts of cruelty to a child by endangering their health, according to the District Attorney's Office. The felony complaint includes knife and great bodily injury allegations.

Lynch, who is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon, was convicted in 2003 of assault upon a peace officer, according to prosecutors.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Lynch and his wife had a violent domestic dispute early the morning of Jan. 21. His wife called 911, telling deputies she was assaulted by her husband, who was emotionally disturbed, who then armed himself with a knife and locked himself in a bedroom with their two children, ages 3 and 5, using a dresser to block the door.

Deputies eventually pushed into the room, and one was allegedly assaulted and "aggressively" thrust into a wall, causing significant head trauma and injuries to his upper torso, according to a sheriff's statement.

The children were not hurt and the injured deputy was taken to a hospital, where he was initially listed in serious condition. No update on his condition was immediately available.

Lynch, who was also taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the struggle with deputies, is being held on $1 million bail. If convicted as charged, he faces up to 31 years and eight months in prison.
