Article In School Newspaper That Uses N-Word Stirs Controversy In Rancho Cucamonga

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — An article in a high school newspaper that used a racial slur is stirring up controversy in Rancho Cucamonga.

Sheyenne Webber and her mother, Tia, are upset over the article and its headline that appear on page 7 of the Los Osos High School newspaper.

"Even asking the question, 'Is the N-word offensive' is an offensive newspaper title," said Tia Webber.

The article edited most of the N-words, replacing the I's with asterisks, but a few were left uncensored.

"I'm very offended that the adult coordinator of the newspaper didn't edit the article at all," Webber said.

The article mentioned the N-word and variations used in books, movies, rap songs and questioned if the words are overused and if there's a problem using them on campus.

It also noted African Americans are one of the minorities on campus and found mixed emotions about the word.

"The racial demographic at my school is already not as diverse as I would like it, but this just points it out even more and makes me feel very singled out than I already do," said Sheyenne.

Parent Ewylsa Mainaky believes the article is appropriate for high school students as it challenges their thought process.

"I told my kids I don't want you to use the word. You may offend some people," Mainaky said.

Even though the article says the N-word is taboo, it says the word has become relevant with teens and will be continued to be used around campus.

"I asked the school to make an announcement that the N-word is not acceptable regardless of what the article says. I want the school to tell the student body it's not OK," said Webber.

CBS2 spoke to the school principal, who referred the news station to the district superintendent, but has not yet heard back.
