Mount Waterman Set To Reopen For First Time In Years After El Nino Delivers Snow

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST (CBSLA.com) — The slopes at Mount Waterman are set to open soon for the first time in years after El Nino delivered several feet of snow.

It's been three years since anyone could enjoy skiing or snowboarding at the resort located in the Angeles National Forest as it doesn't have snow-making machines.

But this week, Mother Nature really delivered.

"We got a solid three feet, some places four, some places 2 ½ but the whole mountain is covered," said Brien Metcalf, who bought the resort with his brother and a friend.

The trio grew up in La Canada Flintridge and learned to ski there. They bought it nine years ago but it's been closed for about as many winters as it's been opened.

"It's a tough business," said Craig Stewart, another owner.

That's why when they got a glimpse of the snow this weekend, they were thrilled.

"We got our first look yesterday. It was amazing," said Stewart.

"We're gonna have an incredible season," said Rick Metcalf. "We've got a great base now."

Dawn Kovner and her husband, Alan, came to the resort to snowshoe Sunday. It took them just over an hour to get there from their home in Sherman Oaks.

"This is our neighborhood backyard for hitting the snow in the wintertime," she said.

The resort is expected to open next Saturday. The cost to take the ski lift is $15 per person.
