Carjacking Suspect Shoots Self, Injures 3 Hostages Inside Long Beach Home

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A gunman injured three hostages -- shooting two and stabbing all three -- inside of a home in Long Beach before he shot himself in the head, police said Friday.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, an off-duty officer was following a Volkswagen Passat in Carson that they recognized from a pursuit that occurred on Thursday.

A short time later, one of the suspects jumped out of the Passat and opened fire on an innocent bystander before he carjacked their red SUV and fled from the scene. The bystander did not sustain injuries during the shooting.

Police said a second suspect fled from the scene in the Passat.

The officer chased the SUV to a neighborhood in Long Beach where the suspect crashed the vehicle and fled on foot.

Officers went door to door looking for the suspect. When they heard gunfire ring out they made entry into a home located in the 3300 block of Daisey Avenue.

Once inside, authorities located two hostages suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. A third hostage was found suffering from a stab wound. Paramedics transported them to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

The gunman sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head during the barricade situation. Paramedics said he remains in grave condition.

The third son, identified as Cheyenne Vasquez, said this on his Facebook page, "Pray for my two brpthers who got shot. I just got released by the hospital with 12 stitches..."

As of 10 p.m. Friday, one suspect was still at large, KCAL9's Tom Wait reported.

He also reportedly only one brother was still in the hospital receiving treatment.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
