Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Big Rig After Crashing Car Over Side Of 605 Freeway In Whittier

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — A man was fatally struck Friday morning on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Whittier after crashing his car, authorities said.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes of the 605 Freeway near Whittier Boulevard at 5:19 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said.

A white sedan went over the side of the freeway, and the driver made it out of the car and climbed back up the embankment to the freeway, where he was struck by the big rig, according to the CHP.

The collision shut down the three right lanes, and a SigAlert was issued by the CHP at 5:34 a.m., Polizzi said. The freeway was fully reopened by 10 a.m., but the Whittier Boulevard offramp was closed until 10:50 a.m.

The name of the victim, who is believed to have been 40, was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
